Monochrome for Summer 2013

So it was seen all over the runways by Kenzo, Donna Karen, Moschino and Chloe this season but what do we really think monochrome and what are the best ways to wear it?

In the fashion world monochrome clothing is most commonly known as black and white however it is also classed as one colour or several shades of one colour or hue. Monochrome first became widely known back in the early 20th century when film photography was only in black and white prior to the invention of colour plates. Nowadays, everything is in colour but monochrome is still extremely fashionable!

Black and white is perhaps mostly associated with smart sartorial tailoring but we have seen monochrome being worn in so many more casual ways. It can be worn with pretty much anything and any other complimentary colour to give you a splash of freshness!

Zig zags, check and stripes first spring to mind - This style can be worn simple or much more daring with contrasting tones and stripes as seen by Kenzo. Stripes can go either way across the body and are timeless while checks and zig zags really represent the swinging 60's.

Simplistic ways to wear monochrome can be a classic fitted white shirt, black skirt and a contrasting black scarf or necklace - This is easy accessible, great for all ages and ideal for the office or more formal occasions.

Patterned florals, cosmic prints and trims - This can be fussy but keep accessories to a minimum and let the outfit do the talking. Should you decide to wear a splash of colour (maybe turquoise or green this season) then add an oversized clutch or statement necklace.

Sports luxe meets monochrome - This is for the very daring and should be worn with caution! Tracksuit bottoms (preferable in a silky fabric) worn with a coloured stiletto heel aka Rihanna or Rita Ora style. Team with a smart blazer or oversized loose fit black or white jumper. Complete the look with a co-ordinating clutch bag for instant glamour.

Take into consideration that monochrome is an all year round trend, its great for all ages and suits all purse strings - Rock it out this season and don't be afraid to experiment with trends and complimentary colours!
